International Medicine

Why are Global Health Experiences important for students and how do they help ARCOM meet its mission of serving the underserved? To broaden students’ medical knowledge, reinforce physical examination skills, develop better clinical reasoning, and encourage practicing medicine among underserved and multicultural populations. This will help develop a better understanding of geographical and cultural diversity so that their clinical skills become global tools when practicing medicine. International rotations and service trips play a critical role in helping ARCOM fulfill its mission of serving the underserved by providing students with unique experiences and skills that are directly applicable to addressing health disparities domestically.

“Working at an orphanage and medical clinic in Guinea Bissau profoundly impacted my education, offering invaluable practical insights and fostering a deep sense of empathy and resilience. Immersed in an environment where resources were scarce, I witnessed firsthand the ingenuity and dedication required to provide care with limited supplies. This experience underscored the importance of adaptability and creative problem-solving, skills that have since become integral to my academic pursuits. Engaging with the children at the orphanage and patients at the clinic, I developed a nuanced understanding of the social determinants of health and the critical role of community in healthcare delivery. These lessons not only enriched my theoretical knowledge but also reinforced my commitment to pursuing a career focused on global health equity and advocacy”.
